Government Professor Price Dies After a Fall

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Markham Professor of Government H. Douglas Price died yesterday morning, after suffering a fall Friday night.

Price was an American government scholar specializing in post-New Deal voting patterns.

He was teaching a junior seminar, Government 90hd: "Elite Decision-Making," and an independent study on politics since the New Deal this semester.

In the spring, he would have taught Government 1300: "Congress: Power and Preferences."

"He has been a member of this department for three decades," said Kenneth A. Shepsle, chair of the Government Department. "He has been one of the significant contributors to the study of American history. He will be missed."

Students remembered Price as a teacher who had an amazing command of American politics, but also had an intense interest in students.

"[Price] was universally well-liked for being a fair and kind person," said Andrei H. Cherny "97, who was taking the independent study course with Price.

"I chose him because of his amazing knowledge of the subject--it was an unparalleled opportunity," said Cherny, who is a Crimson editor.

Shepsle has informed graduate students and other members of the government department of Price's death, and a private service will be held in the near future. Sheplse said that Price would also be publicly commemorated.
