Lin Elected HCS Chief

Running unopposed, Justin T. Lin '98 last night was elected the new president of the Harvard Computer Society (HCS).

Lin says he will maintain the existing practice of providing services to student groups, one of HCS' main functions.

"We hope to continue providing satisfying and worthwhile opportunities for [HCS] members, which include activities that can also benefit the Harvard community at large," Lin said.

Other officers elected last night included Business Manager Carl P. Sjogreen '00 and Secretary David M. Krinsky '99.

Sjogreen defeated Kenneth E. Miller '98 and Aaron M. Milchiker '98 for the position of business manager. Krinsky defeated Christopher A. Thorpe '97-'98 for secretary.

In an election that lasted about an hour and a half, HCS members asked all the candidates for business manager and secretary questions about their candidacies.

Outgoing president Daniel A. Lopez '97 said he thought the new officers had "good skills' and would do a great job leading the organization.

"I hope the new officers will be able to build on top of what we've accomplished over the past year," Lopez said.

HCS provides a range of services to the Harvard community. It publishes Computers@Harvard and provides e-mail accounts and mailing lists for student organizations.

The computer society also runs the Valentine's Day Datamatch program, in which students fill out surveys and receive a list of members of the same or opposite sex who most closely match their answer choices.

HCS also ran the voting program for the recent Undergraduate Council elections and the referendum on finances for student groups and houses.

Sjogreen said HCS is in an "unique position to have a real, longterm impact on campus computing issues."

He said one of his goals for HCS is to "encourage computer and technology use by all segments of the population, and push the administration to make needed changes."
