Some people like to use the internet as a medium to let out their frustations.
But as the Dartmouth men's cross country team found out in Saturday's Boston Invitational, it's better to release frustrations and anxiety on the track, not on the computer.
Before the meet, junior captain Ian Carswell received an e-mail from a Dartmouth runner saying that the Big Green was going to take Harvard down.
It was a good try, but it didn't work.
Harvard finished the meet in fourth place, edging Dartmouth by 10 points and Boston University by 17. Life College took first place in the meet, which was held on the Crimson's home turf at Franklin Park.
The Crimson had two runners finish in the top-three-Carswell and junior Killian Lonergan. Carswell swept the nine-team field in the 8,000-meter event, setting a new course record in a time of 23.51. Longeran finished third in a time of 24:03. Longeran, who has been injured since his freshman year, was competing in only his second meet.
"The team was pleased," Lonergan said. "We beat Dartmouth, who we hadn't beat in a few years. I think this meet will help us a lot because we beat Dartmouth and BU and they're both in our district. It's a good thing to know we can beat them."
The Crimson's success on Saturday can be attributed in part to Harvard coach Frank Haggerty's emphasis on going out harder from the start-on Saturday for the first two miles and in next weekend's meet for the first three miles.
The Crimson's next meet will be against Brown and Northeastern this Friday.
