Duke Incorrectly Cited for Suicides

TO THE EDITORS

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

In a recent interview with your reporters I was quoted as saying that our suicide rate was probably less than a larger university "like Duke." I certainly did not intend to imply that Duke had a suicide problem, and obviously should not have named any specific institution. The facts are that Duke has not had an on-campus suicide in the past 10 years.

As you can imagine, this misstatement has been very upsetting to people at Duke, and I would like to make a sincere apology to all members of the Duke community. Randolph Caitlin, M.D.   Chief of Mental Health Services   University Health Services.
