Losing in the NCAA Tournamnet is always tough, but just to be invited is an honor for many people. Senior men's tennis captain Andrew Rueb didn't come out of Athens, Georgia with a title last week, but he gave the best players in the nation a trio of hard-fought matches.
Rueb defeated Alfred Hanser of Southern Methodist University, 6-3, 6-3 last Wednesday, before falling in straight sets the next day to Chris Pressley of Duke, 6-2, 7-5, in the round of 32.
The loss ended Rueb's season at 23-12. Rueb had been 1-1 in NCAA Tournament action heading into this season.
"I started quickly, then petered out, then started playing my best tennis," Rueb said. "We traded point after point until 5-5, then he pulled it out."
Rueb and sophmore teammate Mitty Arnold also competed in the doubles tournamnet, but they, too, were eliminated Thursday afternoon in the round of 32. The match started well for the Crimson duo, as they won a first-set tiebreak against Chris Mahoney and Pablo Montana of Tennessee. However, the Volunteers came back to take the next two sets, 7-5, 7-5.
Rueb and the Crimson captured the EITA crown this season, going undefeated in league play. The Crimson also qualified for the NCAA Tournament, but Princeton eliminated the Harvard netmen in the second round.
