Arrest Coverage was Inaccurate

I am writing to call your attention to certain inaccuracies in the article entitled "Junior Arrested at Grill" (April 12, 1994). As I was the only person who saw the events unfold from start to finish, I would like to set the record straight on behalf of my friend Leslie Lewis.

First, Leslie did not enter the Grill through the emergency exit as your article alleged. She was already inside when I motioned to her from the line outside to open the emergency door so I could enter and use the restroom.

As I walked in the door, a bouncer named Tom Parks (not Daves as you called him) grabbed me by the hair. He yelled at me to get out and pushed me toward the door. Seeing that this oversized bouncer was obviously hurting me, Leslie walked up and asked him to release me so I could leave.

As she attempted to reason with him, a policeman rushed in from outside and grabbed her by the arms, dragging her outside of the establishment. He shoved her against a brick wall and told her she was under arrest. When she asked with what she was being charged, he would not respond. She then began to ask for his name and badge number; he did not respond to this either. After approximately the third time, he finally told her. He handcuffed her and held her up against the wall while he called for back-up to take her to the police station.

The story above relates the events as they actually occurred that Saturday night, but unfortunately differs significantly fornt he version you printed. It seems that in your drive to get the story on the front page as soon as possible, you compromised fair and accurate representation of the incident. Missy Francis '95
