Every door lock in the three Union dorms was changed yesterday after officials in the Freshman Dean's Office (FDO) suspected that a master key had been stolen, according to an FDO memo.
The master key was reported missing after a burglary in a custodial office of Greenough Hall, according to the memo posted yesterday in Greenough, Hurlbut, and Pennypacker Halls.
Assistant Dean of Freshmen Michael J. Middleton '87 said last night that all locks had been changed by 5 p.m.
"We had a guard wandering around the buildings until we made sure all the locks were changed," Middleton said.
Students' current keys will continue to operate their locks even though the mechanisms were changed, the memo said.
Even though the locks were changed quickly, first-years expressed concern that a set of master keys was left unsecured.
"It's scary that the key to all of our rooms could be so easily taken," said Paul A. Torres '98, a resident of Penny-packer. "It should be better protected."
Mark A. Thompson '98 worried about the security of valuables and other items which could have been taken from his room.
"I wonder how long we will have to live in fear that we could come home one day and find all of our earthly possessions missing," Thompson said.
According to Middleton, there is no further need for students to worry any longer about this event.
