Joelle Tamraz; Diane L. Tang; Rebecca L. Tushnet and Deborah J. Wexler.

The two Phi Beta Kappa chapters are expected to merge next year.

Jean M. Ou '95, a member of the Iota electing committee, said Harvard is one of the few universities in the country that still maintains different chapters for men and women.

Assistant to the Dean of Students Michelle Hewitt said last week that the program's "goal is to have elected 10 percent of the senior class by Commencement."

The selection process for each chapter occurs in three stages.

In the first phase, 48 juniors--24 male and 24 female--who have earned the highest cumulative GPA's among their gender are nominated to join Phi Beta Kappa in their spring semester. Twelve men and 12 women are selected at that time.

In the fall semester, 24 more senior men and 24 more senior women are ordinarily chosen. This year, only 20 women were inducted.

Finally, about 95 seniors are selected in the spring semester from a pool of about 200 applicants.
