Let Private Lives Alone

The staff has again seen fit to comment on, and condemn, the private lives of Harvard students. The final clubs, for all the attention they receive are private organizations made up of individual Harvard students. The policies they set on admittance are their business alone. If the student members choose to associate only with other males, or only to allow blue bloods into their hallowed halls, so be it.

There are valid reasons for ensuring that certain businesses and service-providing institutions do not discriminate. That does not extend to social clubs whose only apparent export is empty kegs and woozy members.

The staff, in its haste to apply strict principles of non-discrimination to the clubs, has forgotten another principle--toleration. The funny thing about toleration is that it must apply even to those we don't particularly want to tolerate.
