Register to Vote While Registering for Classes

Newly arrived Harvard students wishing to register to vote in the November 2 elections must do so by Wednesday, October 13 at 10 p.m., according to Joe Kaplan, assistant director of the Cambridge Election Commission.

Election officials will be present at Harvard registration in an effort to register students as voters, Kaplan said. Students may also register by visiting Election Commission headquarters at 362 Green St.

Students who registered to vote in Cambridge for last year's presidential elections should make sure their names are still on polling lists. Verification cards are sometimes sent to dorms over the summer, and students who assume they are still registered to vote may sometimes get an unwelcome surprise when they arrive at the polls only to be told their names are no longer on the list.

Students who have moved should be sure to notify the election commission of any changes of address. "If they want to remain registered, it's very, very important," Kaplan said.

Volunteers and election commission employees worked over the summer at sidewalk tables, lifting the number of registered voters in the city to nearly 45,000.

At the request of the City Council, Election Commission officials are also studying the feasibility of door-to-door registration.
