Police Arrest Two Men After Struggle, Chase

By Joe Mathews

Two Medford men were arrested last week after a chase and struggle with University police.

Harvard police Lt. John F. Rooney said yesterday that the two men were caught attempting to steal bicycles from the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts.

However, the arrest of one of the men outside the center on Quincy Street on Thursday, August 12, turned ugly.

Rooney said that when Harvard police detectives Thomas Simas and Richard DeCruz apprehended one suspect, the arrest turned into a "violent struggle." Simas sustained minor injuries.

In addition, police chased the other suspect through streets and backyards to the corner of Irving and Scott Streets near Cambridge's border with Somerville.

Edward Cefalo, 21, and Andre Ducasse, 19, have been charged with attempted larceny of a bicycle, possession of burglarious tools and assault and battery on a police officer, Rooney said.

An official in Middlesex County District Attorney Thomas Reilly's office said yesterday that no court date for the two men had been set.
