After a spring break in Florida, the Harvard softball team found itself in unfamiliar playing conditions on the road last night against Bryant.
It was cold.
"The cold took some getting used to," Captain Nancy Johnson said.
Harvard's bats were anything but cold, however, as the Crimson won both games of a doubleheader against the Indians, 5-4 and 14-8, behind the clutch pitching of senior Christine Carr.
The win raised Harvard's record to 7-3.
"It was a very positive opener, definitely a good outing for us."
Carr pitched all seven innings of the first game, but Harvard was down 4-3 in sixth when junior Christine Vogt hit a triple to tie the game. Senior Katie Fitta scored the winning run with a single in the top of the seventh.
Besides recording the complete game, Carr knocked in three runs, according to Johnson.
In the second game, Harvard jumped to an 11-0 lead after five innings. Bryant scored six times in the bottom of the fifth, however, forcing Coach Barry Haskell to bring in Carr for sophomore Liz Walker on the mound.
Carr iced the victory with two strong innings.
Johnson was pleased with her team's stamina throughout the evening.
"We were a little on the bus in the first game, but our second game was strong and that was unusual for us," Johnson said. "Usually, we die in the second game."
