Yale Search Has No Deadline

Recent newspaper reports citing April 1 as the new deadline for naming the next president of Yale University were incorrect, the spokesperson for Yale's presidential search committee said yesterday.

"The acting president was joking about the April deadline," said Martha K. Matzke, who is in charge of search-related information. "They will take as long as they need to take."

Matzke said the search committee is "probably doing their final discussions," but no deadline had been set.

March I had long been considered the deadline for the search committee. The Yale Corporation the university's governing body, met on February 27 and 28 and many had expected an announcement following the meeting.

As the search for Yale's 21st president winds down, speculation centers on a handful of candidates Yale Provost Judith Rodin; Yale Law School Dean Guido Calabrest. Columbia law School Dean Lance M. Liebman and others.

Rodin has been at Yale since 1972 she served as dean of the graduate school of Arts and Sciences in 1991 and 1992 before being named to her current position last reputation as a superlative administrator negotiator and professor.

Calabrest has also been mentioned frequently in connection with the top post. Students have praised calabrest, a Yale alumnus, for his bold leadership and fundraising skills went real qualities in light of the university's current fiscal crisis. A recent report in the Washington Post, how ever, and Calabrest was considering the job of Solicitor General.

Liebman, a former Harvard law Professor, is another Yale alumnus and was a Yale trustee from 1981 to 1983.

Others said to be under consideration include David Boren, a Yale alumnus and a current trustee, Stanford University Business School Dean A. Michael Spence, formerly dean of Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and Sidney Altman, a biology professor at Yale.
