Material Sciences Expert Hails From UC Santa Barbara

By Evan J. Eason

Anthony G. Evans, a materials science expert, has accepted a tenure offer in the Division of Applied Sciences, department officials said yesterday.

Evans, currently Alcoa Professor and director of the High Performance Composites Center Materials Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara, will serve as Gordon McKay professor of materials science and engineering.

Evans' research interests are "the mechanical properties and processing of advanced structural materials."

Evans, 51, holds a B.Sc. and a Ph.D. in metallurgy from the Imperial College, London.

Before assuming his current post at Santa Barbara, Evans was a professor at the University of California, Berkeley.

He was also a lecturer on materials research at Harvard in 1986.

Evans is the author of more than 300 publications including a 1976 book entitled Structural Ceramics.

Evans was not available for an interview yesterday.

Paul C. Martin '52, dean of the division of applied sciences, declined to comment.

Other professors in the department were unavailable for comment.
