Council Approves Free Comedy Show

Big-Budget Concert Next on Agenda

By Tara H. Arden-smith

In a meeting which barely met its constitutionally mandated 50 percent quorum, the Undergraduate Council voted last night to sponsor a comedy concert this Friday.

This will be the second free concert the council provides to students this semester. The concert will feature performances by Steve Hurley of Saturday Night Live, Paul Kozlowski of MTV, and Janine DeToulio, said organizer Dairo E. Moreno '95.

The council budgeted $982 for the concert in its motion, which passed unopposed with 41 votes and one abstention.

The only member to speak against the motion was Richard Cole Jr. "I oppose the motion because I think we should only spend $981 and not a dollar more," he quipped.

The concert will be held at 8 p.m. in Science Center D, which holds 250.

The council will consider concerts of a larger scale next week, when campus life committee member John A. Mann '92-94 submits a motion to fund a $14,000 Digable Planet concert to the full council. Mann said he expected the council would recoup about $10,000 by selling $10 tickets to the event.

Mann entreated council members to go to their constituents this week and test their reactions to this music group Mann characterized as "alternative pop."

"I want you all to come back next Sunday and tell us whether there's an interest among the students," Mann said. "Our question should not be whether we should sponsor a big concert at all, because every school does one, but whether this particular concert is a good one."

Mann stressed that the group was hugely successful at Tufts recently. The concert, if approved, will be held in Memorial Hall on January 13.

In response to inquiries from council members, Parliamentarian David A. Smith '94 informed the council of a few basic rules of parliamentary procedure. He posted the rules on the blackboard of Harvard 104, framing his head.

Council President Carey W. Gabay '94 announced that the finance committee will hold a second summit with Phillips Brooks House leaders thisWednesday to discuss future funding policies.

Efforts are underway to fill the vacanciescreated by three council members who haveresigned, said council Vice President MelissaGarza '94.

Former presidential candidate Mark D. McKay'94, John K. Hsu '94, and Adam M. Smith '94 allleft the council in recent weeks.

After last night's meeting, three morevacancies could emerge. Three members reachedtheir maximum allotment of absences, and will becontacted by Garza today informing them of theirexpulsion.

However, these members may appeal to theexecutive board for reinstatement this week, Garzaadded.

The meeting was attended by only 41 of thecouncil's 82 members, but Gabay said the lowturnout was understandable because many studentswere just returning from Thanksgiving break.

"I got several calls from frantic studentsstuck at the airport tonight," Gabay said. "Butthere's nothing we could do about that.
