Fire Alarm Evacuates Prescott St. Apt. Building

By Elizabeth T. Bangs

Residents of an apartment building at 20 Prescott St. were evacuated last night after the Cambridge Fire Department responded to a false alarm reporting smoke in the building.

Four engines blocked off Prescott St. between Harvard St. and Broadway last night at about 9:10 p.m., but despite a sounding alarm, a search of the building revealed no smoke, according to Deputy Chief William Rose.

Firefighters reset the smoke alarm and residents were allowed to reenter the building at about 9:30 p.m. Firefighters called the four trucks and ladder "routine" for a call of this nature.

Some residents of Greenough and Hurlbut Halls, both located on Prescott Street, gathered outside to investigate. "The whole thing was kind of anti-climatic, but it beat the hell out of studying," said Luke D. Moland '97, a Greenough resident.
