Dartmouth Student Dies; Campus Shocked by News

Daniel B. Boyer IV, a Dartmouth College senior, died of a shotgun wound in a Lebanon, N.H., gun shop last Tuesday in what the Grafton (N.H.) County Attorney has ruled a suicide.

According to the Dartmouth College News Service, Boyer was an outstanding student and had been accepted early to the University of Pittsburgh Medical School only two weeks ago.

"We are shocked, we are extremely saddened, and we are puzzled," said Roland Adams, a Dartmouth spokesperson.

"[Boyer was] a guy who had achieved a lot and who looked like he was on his way to achieving a great deal more," Adams said. "He had a very promising life in front of him."

Boyer, a history major, was named a Presidential Scholar last year. He had been studying German biomedical laboratory development in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, according to the news service.

Boyer, who would have been 22 on November 3, was also a varsity squash player.

"The team is pretty much devastated," said Christina V. Brownell, head squash coach at Dartmouth. "He's going to be sorely missed."

The coach said Boyer's behavior had been stable before his death. "The kids were all floored," Brownell said. And Brownell said the Dartmouth community will not recover quickly from Boyer's death. "It'll take some time," she said.
