Not Just the Regatta

By Y. TAREK Farouki

If you haven't heard, this weekend the Head of the Charles Regatta descends on Harvard, bringing with it greasy sausages, hordes of prep school lushes and most importantly scores of crews and their boats.

But for those sports fans who can't wait until tomorrow for their athletic fix, this weekend promises other ways to satisfy the spectator junkie in all of us.

The Harvard men's water polo team hosts the Ivy League Championships today and tomorrow at Boldgett Pool and will most likely fight Brown and Princeton for the Ancient Eight title. Harvard takes on Dartmouth in the first round today, and co-captain Jeff Zimmerman said the contest should pose no problem for the high powered Crimson.

"It should be a blowout," said Zimmerman, who has given opposing teams fits with his knack for putting the ball in the net. "The game against Brown should be a good one. They beat us earlier in the season, but we'll be ready for them."

Zimmerman said the team wants to gain some momentum for next weekend's regional competition by beating Brown and Princeton in this tourney.

"We have to make sure and execute all our opportunities," Zimmerman said. "Next week we play Army and we have to win that."

The Crimson needs a victory over the Cadets next weekend because that result determines whether it will compete in the national tournament.

For those out there who have not yet taken a fancy to watching water polo, the field hockey team takes on 17th-ranked Princeton. The Tigers are in second place in the Ivy League, a half game behind the undefeated Quakers.

Princeton boats the most dominating freshman this year in forward Amy McFarlane. The rookie leads the league in overall and conference scoring and has been Ivy rookie of the week four times and player of the week once this season.

Both the men's and women's soccer teams also face Princeton at home this weekend. The women play today while the men face the Tigers tomorrow. Princeton's teams, however, have nothing in common. While the men lead the Ivy League with a 4-0 record, the Tiger women have an 0-4 mark.

If all that's still not enough, there's the football team's contest against guess who...yup Princeton at The Stadium.

And then, there's always the greasy sausages and prep school kids by the banks of the Charles. P.S. Princeton will be there too.
