Residents of 29 Garden St. were evacuated for about 20 minutes early this morning when an overfilled washing machine caught fire and filled a third floor laundry room with smoke.
Acting Deputy Edward Rose of the Cambridge Fire Department said the dormitory's fire alarms were set off when a rubber belt on the machine ignited.
Nearly 200 students began streaming out of the building when the alarms sounded at about 12:35 a.m.
