Council Elects Committee Chairs

By Tara H. Arden-smith

The three committees of the Undergraduate Council--reduced from five by the body's new constitution--elected their first chairs last night.

Two of the new committees are consolidations of four former committees. The student affairs committee has absorbed the academic and residential committees of previous years, while the campus life committee fused the past services and social committees.

Christopher J. Garofalo '94 will chair student affairs. Campus life leadership will be divided between Joshua D. Liston '95 and Mark D. Connolly '96.

The remaining committee, finance, will be headed by Jamila A. Braswell '95. The finance committee's work will begin quickly, since tomorrow is the due date for grant applications from more than 100 student groups.

The campus life committee has also begun to plan events for the upcoming term. Members voted to pass a resolution last night that would put a proposal for a free comedy concert before the full council at Sunday's meeting.

The concert, which may feature Boston radio personality Chris Zito, would be held in the Science Center on October 29.

The council's by-laws provide funding for fourcouncil-sponsored comedy concerts throughout theyear. The council has approved a budget of $1,500for each concert.

But the first concert will cost the councilless than $1,000. "If this continues, that meanswe could have six free concerts this year, insteadof just four," Liston said. "We're off to a reallygreat start.
