Vika to Perform
The Ukrainian rock group, Vika, will be performing at the Longy school of Music today in concert sponsored by the Harvard Ukrainian summer Institute.
The group, headed by singer Vika Vradij, who was recently chosen as "Miss Rock of Europe--92" is known for "progressive" "postpunk" politically charged songs and interpretations s of Ukrainan folk music.
Named by Soviet officials as "a destructive element," Vika had been banned from Ukrainian television for years, said Yuri Shevchuk, an instructor of Ukrainian at the summer school.
With the coming of perestroika the band was allowed more exposure in the Ukraine. The group gained national attention at the Chervona Ruta Festival in 1989. JS
