Anthropologist Named New Eliot Senior Tutor

If you're interested Indonesian religious rites, don't go to Jakarta. Try Eliot House instead.

Culminating a search that began in March, Kenneth M. George, assistant professor of anthropology, was appointed Eliot House's new Senior Tutor last Friday.

George, who is already an affiliate of Eliot's Senior Common Room, said he applied for the position because he wanted "a new experience."

"I am looking forward to life at Eliot House both on personal and professional terms," George said.

Senior Tutors represent students in front of the Administrative Board and advise them on academic and personal matters.

George will be replacing Donald D. Bacon '62, who is leaving the house to take on teaching responsibilities at Stanford University.

George also serves as the Head Tutor of the Social Anthropology wing of the Anthropology department, and is currently conducting research on religion in Indonesia as well as teaching Anthropology 176: Language and culture.

Despite his numerous academic commitment, George said he was not worried about the prospect of having to juggle research and his three-year appointment as a tutor "I'll try tomanage it as I go," he said.

Although he has no experience as a residenttutor, George said he sees himself as an"advocate" for Eliot House students.

"I see [the job] as essentially twofold," hesaid, "The first is to help set the academic tenorof the House and the second is to both forward andrepresent to both college and the world outsideHarvard the interests of Eliot House students."

Eliot Co-Master Kristine L. Forsgard said thatshe was "very delighted" that George accepted theposition.

"It's a job that requires an enormous amount ofunderstanding and sensitivity," Forsgard said.

Eliot Co-Master Stephen A. Mitchell said whenchoosing the senior tutor, he and Forsgard werelooking for someone who would enhance theintellectual character of the house.

"Ken is just marvelous. He is both a greatteacher and knows the administrative lay of theland," said Mitchell, who is also professor ofScandinavian language and literature and offolklore
