New Executives stress Changing, Expanding Role of Organization at Harvard

By Rajath Shourie, Contributing Reporter

The Harvard-Radcliffe South Asian Association last night elected Uday N. Kumar '94 and Mona M. Patel '94 as co-presidents of the growing organization.

Kumar, a Cabot House resident, said he hopes more members will get involved in the group's activities. He also said he wants to make the campus more aware of South Asian culture.

"It's going to be a tough job, but we're both genuinely committed," said Patel, who lives in Mather House.

Before the 40 members voted, outgoing presidents Muneer I. Ahmed '93 and Mukesh Prasad '93 summed up the events of the past year and detailed the issues that the new executive board will face.

Saving an endowed faculty post in Indo-Muslim culture was stressed as an important goal. Organization members said they worry the chair may be eliminated because of a lack of funds.

The organization's members also discussed how to form a working relationship with the Asian American Association, a student organization which says it represents Asian students on campus.

Candidates delivered speeches and answered questions raised by the attending members.

The group expanded its executive board this year, adding two new positions: the gender issues chair and the international issues chair. Mridu Gulati '93 and Kashif S. Alvi '94 will assume the two posts.

Other Officers

The organization also elected Sameer Bhargava '95 as treasurer; Shapour T. Alam '93-94 as publicity chair; Nikhilesh M. Korgaonkar '95 as academic/political chair; Tania Kapur '94 as social chair; and Sarada Gurubhagavatula '94 as liaison chair.
