Terriers End Softball's Eight-Game Win Streak

By Joanne Nelson, Crimson Staff Writer

The Harvard softball team fell victim to Boston University, 8-1, yesterday, ending its eight game winning streak.

The matchup, slated as a doubleheader was thankfully shortened to one game by inclement weather.

"Forty-three degrees and raining, a pleasure for fans and players alike," Coach Barry Haskell said sarcastically.

Harvard had trouble fielding balls on BU super-elastic turf field, and admittedly, a tough time facing BU pitcher Shannon Downey (a new transfer from junior college). Downey struck out eight batters and allowed only four hits.

"I'd say she's the best pitcher we've faced," Co-Captain Chris Carr said. "She's quick and she had a lot of junk."

Only senior Liz Resnick, who hit a solo home run down the third base line in the fifth inning, junior Kate Fitta, who slapped two singles, and sorphomore Christine Vogt could get a handle on her pitches.

The Terriers, using its home field advantage to the fullest, tore right into Harvard, scoring four times in the first inning.

Harvard fist-two batters she faced. Both runners advanced on a passed ball.

The next batter hit a grounder to sophomore Ann Kennon, who tried unsucessfully to nail the runner at the plate.

Without a single base hit, BU already had a 1-0 lead.

If the Crimson had any visions of a comeback after the first, Meredith Jenning in flicted further damage against Harvard with her two-run triple in the second inning.

Senior Julie Fromholtz entered the game in the fourth inning and pitched strongly, but the Huskies were already off and running.

"Kimball had some trouble throwing' off the rug, which had a raised rubber," Haskell said. "As for BU, good pitching always beats good hitting and that's basically the ballgame."
