In an effort to obtain better phone service for students, the Undergraduate Council's residential committee this week proposed a set of changes to the Harvard University Telephone Office.
Student Services Manager Jack Wise said yesterday that the telephone office is giving serious consideration to the committee's suggestions.
"The committee's recommendations are very good," Wise said.
Residential committee member Maria G. Cerda '92-93' said that Wise and the committee had agreed that contiguous service--which includes calls to Cambridge, Boston and several nearby areas--should be activated in all common rooms the day students arrive on campus.
"We want every student to have a dial tone when they get to their room," Wise said.
Wise said he discussed this proposal with New England Telephone officials yesterday and that the meeting was "very positive."
"But there are still a lot of procedural-type things that have to be dealt with," he added.
Credit Limit Extended
In addition, Wise said, the telephone office's credit limit policy will probably change next year.
Currently, if students make more than $100 worth of Personal Access Code (PAC) calls in one month, their PAC is deactivated.
The telephone office will probably eliminate that $100 limit for students "in good standing who pay their bills on time," Wise said.
But students with poor credit records will still face restrictions, he said.
"If a student's payments are more than 60 days overdue, we would give them a $100 limit," he said.
The residential committee also suggested that the telephone office update the student directory at the beginning of second semester, Cerda said.
The new book would include transfer students and students who have changed their telephone numbers.
Another of the committee's proposals was that the phone office reactivate PAC codes automatically at the beginning of the school year, as long as students have no outstanding balances.
The committee also requested more Centrex phones in Harvard Yard, Cerda said.
