After an enormous win Sunday on the road against Ivy League Champion Princeton, the women's ice hockey team was cautiously optimistic about its chances for a bid in the ECAC tournament.
On Monday, however, the team was bypassed for the final spot in favor of Brown, a team beneath Harvard in the ECAC standings.
Knowing that its season was essentially done, the Crimson came out flat in Hanover, N.H., dropped its final game of the reason last night to Dartmouth, 7-1.
Harvard Coach Dooley said his team's poor performance was less an indication of its talent and more of its disappointment in not being selected for post-season play.
"Not making the tournament really took the legs out of this team. We played so well at Princeton on Sunday that not making the tournament really hurt," Dooley said.
Dartmouth dominated the contest from the start.
After establishing a 1-0 lead in the first period, the Big Green piled on four more goals in the second to take a commanding 5-0 lead and put the game out of reach.
Harvard senior Co-Captain Sandra Whyte helped the Crimson avoid a shutout when she scored her 21st goal of the season in the third period.
She finishes her career as Harvard's all-time leading scorer, with 139 points.
Season in Review
While Dooley was quick to compliment Dartmouth as a strong team (the Big Green is the number-five seed in the tournament), he also had words of praise for his own squad.
"Dartmouth came ready to play and took it to us from the beginning, but [Harvard] has shown a lot of heart this season and knows it is a very good too," Dooley said. "The Beanpot win against Northeastern was a real highlight."
The team finishes its season at 11-9 overall, 5-5 in the Ivy League.
