WRESTLING NOTEBOOK

Grapplers Ailing, Travel South

By Andrews J. Arends, Contributing Reporter

Everyone has heard about all the injuries suffered by the Harvard men's hockey team, but hockey Coach Ronn Tomassoni has nothing on wrestling Coach Jim Peckham.

Going into the final meets of the regular season this weekend, the wrestling team (8-8 overall, 0-3 Ivy) is without the services of 11 wrestlers, with four more competing as walking wounded.

"It has been devastating," said Peckham. "We could have beaten Penn and Princeton last weekend if we had been healthy.

The injured include top wrestlers senior Bret Janis (shoulder), last year's Ivy League Rookie of the Year Michael Warnick, (shoulder), sophomore heavyweight Bill Counihan (knee), Co-Captain Mike Costanza (knee), senior Same Cole (shoulder) and sophomore Steve Aoki (knee).

Costanza, Cole and Aoki will probably wrestle this weekend, but Counihan is doubtful.

Rolling Over Lowell

Harvard went up to Lowell yesterday for a make-up match against U. Mass-Lowell.

"Lowell is pretty good NCAA Division II team, but we pretty much dominated them," said Peckham. Harvard for feited one weight class and swept the rest of the matches.

Wrapping It Up

The Crimson heads south today on a two-day road trip to face Brown and Columbia in the team's last regular season games.

"We've got a pretty good shot at Columbia, but Brown is another story. They are just too deep," Peckham said.

On March 6 and 7, Harvard heads down to Philadelphia for the Eastern Regionals of the NCAA tournament, hosted by Pennsylvania.
