Fire Dept. Evacuates Currier

Alarm System Fails

By Anna D. Wilde, Crimson Staff Writers

Three engine companies responded to a grease fire in the Currier House kitchen last night after the building's automatic fire extinguishing system failed to function.

The fire, which was confined to the kitchen area, forced the evacuation of all house residents. No injuries were reported.

Because the smoke alarms in Currier House did not work properly, the Cambridge Fire Department learned about the fire through a telephone call, according to John J. Gelinas, deputy chief of the Cambridge Fire Department.

"The fire a alarms did not operate," Gelinas said. "The firemen operated them manually after arriving at the scene."

Residents were allowed to return to the building at 7:57 p.m.,
