Four candidates will compete next week in Dunster House's second set of Undergraduate Council elections this year, vying to fill the position vacated by former council Vice Chair Maya G. Prabhu '94.
The vote, to be held next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, will elect Dunster House's fifth Undergraduate Council representative. The candidates are Jason Dean '95, Mark R. Kozek '94, Ted G. Rose '94 and Edward C. H. Yim '94.
Prabhu resigned as vice chair of the council two weeks ago following a scandal over an invalid social committee election. Steven N. Kalkanis '93 was elected two days later to replace Prabhu as vice chair.
"Elections in the middle of the semester are not unusual," said Victor Chiu '95, chair of the Dunster House delegation. "People resign, take a leave of absence, or are kicked off for having too many absences."
Council bylaws require that a vacancy be filled either by appointment by the house delegation or through house elections, Chiu said.
The candidates said they welcomed this second round of elections.
"I was unsure of what I wanted to do this year when the first elections came up," said Yim, a former Dunster House representative. "This opportunity showed up and I took it."
"It's something I've always been wanting to try," Kozek said.
Yim said that if elected, he would work to promote better publicity tactics for the council.
"There's a general attitude among the students that the U.C. doesn't do anything," said Yim, a DeWolfe resident. "Students don't give the U.C. enough credit." Yim said he also wanted the council to have astronger voice in Administrative Board decisions."I'd like to see the U.C. get a voting position onthe Ad Board," he said. Kozek said he would work to overhaul thelottery system for room assignments, whichcurrently asks first years to list their top fourhousing choices. "You should list the four choices where youdon't want to live on campus," he said
