Making Your Global Dreams Come True

THE INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE PROGRAM

By William Klingelhofer, Office of Career Services

Have you ever dreamed of finding a summer job with a large investment bank in Asia or an international consulting firm in Europe? Or how abut spending the year after you graduate working to preserve the rainforests in Costa Rica or writing speeches for a member of Parliament in London? Would you like a teaching job a short bus ride from the Acropolis, or perhaps the chance to be a journalist in India?

These are all dreams that Harvard students have made real during the past year. In fact, there are very few things out there-anywhere around the globe-that Harvard students haven't tried at some time. The International Experience Program (IEP) at OCS encourages and helps students to explore such opportunities for overseas learning and work.

The International Experience Fair at this year's Career Forum will offer you a chance to learn more about the resources of the IEP, to meet with representatives from popular study abroad and student travel programs, to learn about the opportunities for volunteer projects abroad, and speak with someone from the Fellowships Office at OCS about funding overseas experiences. Many of the companies and organizations represented at the Career Forum have international offices; speaking to their representatives can help you learn about overseas opportunities.

After you've learned the basics at the Forum, IEP advisors at OCS offer individual counseling on study and internship programs offered by various U.S. and international institutions. Several internship programs straddling the globe are also administered directly through the IEP. Would you like to spend a year in Paris, for example? Or next summer in Japan? Meetings being sponsered by the IEP during the coming months can offer you some specific ideas on how to do this. Chech out the OCS Newsletter for the when's and where's of it and pick up a copy of The Harvard Guide to International Experience, available at OCS and in your House library.

The possibilities for a rewardinbg overseas experience are almost limitless; the reality of a once-in-a lifetime international opportunity is yours for the making. The IEP has many resources available to help it happen. All you need is the dream.
