Safety Isn't a Minor Issue

TO THE EDITORS OF THE CRIMSON:

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Safety on campus seems to be a minor issue, until something terrible and well-publicized happens. However, it is obvious that even after the crises we have had on campus since my arrival here, big problems have gone unfixed.

The campus is not as well lit as it could be. Take, for example, the Linden Street block between Mount Auburn and Mass Ave. Bordered by Claverly Hall and Adams House, this street is definitely part of our campus, yet at night it is lit very poorly or not at all, with the exception of one doorway--that of the final club which also fronts on Linden. If the safest place on a campus street is in front of a final club, then I suggest we have a saftey problem.

This is just one example. A lot of other issues need to be addressed, especially concerning shuttle and escort availability. There has been some movement on safety issues. Hopefully we do not need a reoccurrence of tragedy on our comapus to spur us into more consequential action. Sharon Fenick '94
