W. Booters Looking To Break .500 Mark

When the Harvard women's soccer team travels to Philadelphia today, it won't be looking for the Liberty Bell.

Instead, the Crimson (3-3 over-all, 1-1 Ivy) hopes that in its game against Pennsylvania, it will find that all important win to push Harvard over the 500 barrier.

"The Penn game will be a good game for us," Harvard Coach Tim Wheaton said earlier this week. "It will give us a good idea of what the league's going to be like."

As of last week, Penn owned a 2-3 overall record, and an 0-2 league record on the year. The Quakers have defeated American University and Bucknell, while losing to Villanova and Ivy League rivals Dartmouth (0-6) and Columbia (1-4 OT).

The Crimson also faced Columbia earlier this year, defeating the Lions 2-0.

Although Penn is not expected to take the 1992 World Cup by any stretch of the imagination, Wheaton said the Quakers are a challenging opponent.

"They may not have the greatest record, but they'll give us a test, like any Ivy League team," he said.

Harvard is coming off Tuesday's 2-1 overtime victory over crosstown rival Boston College at Ohiri Field.

Despite the win, Wheaton was not overly pleased with his team-largely because of it's dismal offensive performance.

"We seemed to get frantic every time we touched the ball," Wheaton said. "We gave up the ball way too much."

Wheaton still expressed confidence that his team would improve with each game. "We just need to focus on improving in each upcoming game," he said, immediately following his Boston College game. "Now, it's on to Penn!"

THE NOTEBOOK: Cornell and Dartmouth, last season's Ivy League co-champions, are once again leading the league standings...As of last week, Cornell bosted a 5-1 overall record, 3-0 in Ivy competition, while Dartmouth's victory over Princeton pushed the Big Green to a 2-0 Ancient Eight record.
