Upperclass registration is scheduled for today, and 4837 returning undergraduates are expected to let the University know officially that they are back in town.
According to Associate Registrar of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Thurston A. Smith, this year's registration will be "simplified and streamlined," thanks to the use of new, computer-readable forms. Smith said the new forms would leave more of his staff free "to actually talk to students, instead of sitting at machines all day."
Simplified forms and the presence of more staff from the registrar's office may make registration go faster, but the dreaded red dot will still slow down approximately one seventh of returning undergraduates.
The term bill office's supervisor of collection, Karen M. Rockwell, said yesterday that approximately 700 students will receive the dreaded blotch on their registration packets. The dot indicates that they must meet with a representative from the term bill office before continuing to register.
When students leave Memorial Hall, they will be met by representatives of more than 100 student groups, according to Michelle L. Hewitt of the Dean of Student's office.
Among the groups aggressively wooing returning students is The Crimson, which will hold comp meetings next week.
Registration is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Memorial Hall. Students who sleep past 4 p.m., or who missed registration for some other reason can register late beginning Monday morning, but they will be charged a $50 late fee, Smith said.
Smith said that registration is usually busiest in the morning, and that lines are usually shortest after lunch, at 2 or 3 p.m.
