Zimmerman Voted Player of the Year

The Harvard men's tennis team may have lost its shot at an NCAA title, but the Crimson continues to garner top honors.

Mike Zimmerman, the Harvard's first singles player, was named the Eastern Intercollegiate Tennis Association (EITA) Player of the Year yesterday.

The 40th-ranked Zimmerman garnered six of nine first-place votes, and with 48 total points, finished 12 points ahead of his nearest competitor, Dartmouth's Matt Semler.

And, Zimmerman continues to make waves at the NCAA tournament in Athens, Ga. On Tuesday, the junior from Great Neck, N.Y. dispatched the tournament's fourth-seed Brian MacPhie 1-6, 6-2, 6-0. Yesterday, in a tremendous upset, Zimmerman defeated second-ranked Al Parker from Georgia.

Teammate Albert Chang joined Zimmerman on the EITA All-Star team. A native of Calgary, Alberta, Chang is currently ranked 30th in the nation, having completed the season with a 17-6 overall mark, 7-2 EITA.

On Tuesday, Chang handled UC-Irvine's Mike Roberts in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 in the first-round of the nationals.

Harvard sophomore Mike Shyjan became the third Crimson player to be selected to the EITA All-Star squad. The Chelmsford, Mass. native shredded every EITA opponent he faced this year, and never lost a set. Playing number-three, Shyjan finished the season with a 15-5 overall record.

Shyjan, an EITA All-Star last year as well, was sidelined with three games left in the season after sustaining a knee injury.

Doubles Honors

EITA coaches also extended All-Star honors to Crimson's doubles squads yesterday.

Zimmerman and Shyjan were unanimously voted the top doubles team in the league. The 12th-ranked tandem finished the season 9-3 overall, and 2-0 EITA.

Chang and Brent LaTanzi garnered All-Star honors after going undefeated in EITA competition.
