The Harvard men's baseball team continued its strong hitting this weekend but still managed only a split of its doubleheader against Massachusetts in Amherst, MA.
The Crimson (4-10 overall) came close to sweeping the twinbill, but dropped the opener, 5-4. Massachusetts scored twice in the second inning, but the Crimson took the lead, 3-2, in the top of the fourth on a three-run homer by freshman catcher David Morgan.
Harvard led four to three going into the seventh and final inning, but Massachusetts pushed two runs across the plate for the victory. Sean Johnston pitched a strong game for the Crimson, going six-plus innings but collaring his second loss of the season. Johnston struck out four while walking just one.
Dinger Deluge
Harvard stormed back in the second game, hammering out 15 runs on 18 hits, including five home runs, to top Massachusetts, 15-10. Morgan homered once again for his third round-tripper of the season and sophomore right fielder Mike Hill (1), Captain Marcel Durand (1), junior first baseman Dan Scanlan (2) and freshman If Mike Giardi (1) also went downtown.
Harvard's big innings were the second and fourth frames, when the Crimson tallied five and six runs, respectively. Freshman Jeff Mitchell went all the way for his first victory of the season. Mitchell gave up 10 runs in his seven innings of work, but only four of those runs were earned.
"The general feeling right now is that we're not playing as well as we can," Durand said. "But we're scoring a lot of runs and our defense will come around."
