Laxwomen Overcome Brown, 11-8

Until yesterday, there were two undefeated women's lacrosse teams in the Ivy League: Harvard and Brown.

After the Crimson's 11-8 victory over the Bruins yesterday in Providence, R.I., Harvard is the only team that can make that claim.

After Brown jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, the Crimson took over. Harvard scored five unanswered goals to take a 5-1 lead that was increased to 8-2 at halftime.

"We really dominated from the start," Co-Captain Ceci Clark said. "But the second half was pretty even. We both played pretty well."

The Harvard game plan revolved around trying to contain Bruins center Suzanne Bailey. The Crimson's Becky Gaffney was given the task of stopping Bailey.

"We really just shut her down," Clark said. "We did a very good job with her."

For Harvard there was no one player who dominated the scoring, but Gaffney and Sue Carls each had two goals apiece.

"This win will definitely move us up in the polls," Clark said.

Brown had been ranked ahead of Harvard all season long.
