Crimson Takes Pair, 6-3 and 3-0, From Error-Prone Chieftans

By John B. Roberts

It's a whole new ballgame--or at least a clean slate.

The Harvard softball team took both ends of its doubleheader with Stonehill College at Soldier's Field Park yesterday, 6-3 and 3-0, and evened its season record at 13-13.

"It's good to be at .500 again," said Crimson hurler Julie Fromholz, who twirled eight strikeouts in the first game.

The Crimson capitalized on Stonehill's sloppy defense and numerous bases-on-balls to take the first game, 6-3. Kate Driscoll allowed only seven hits for the Chieftans, but she gave Harvard eight free trips to first base.

A wild pitch, a passed ball and seven Stonehill errors eased the journey home for the Crimson.

"They made a lot of errors, especially on the right side," Fromholz said.

Katie Fitta walked, doubled and scored twice in the opener, leading the way as most of the Crimson team enjoyed success against Driscoll. Eight of the nine Crimson starters reached base.

Harvard was not able to muster the same amount of offense in the finale, but Stonehill was stone cold. Crimson sophomore Christine Carr tossed a shutout victory, giving up only four hits.

Two of the Crimson's tallies were unearned runs, as the Chieftans continued their poor defensive work. Harvard avoided playing down to its opponent, however, rewarding Carr's efforts with errorless play.

Offensively, Beverly Armstrong's triple was the sole Crimson extra-base hit, scoring shortstop Ann Kennon from first to make it 2-0. The insurance run was more than enough against the sloppy Stonehill squad.

"They had some weak spots that we hit," Fromholz said. Crimson, 6-3 at Soldiers Field Park.
