Icewomen Rout B.U., 10-0

BOSTON--The Harvard women's hockey team had just the opposite experience of its male counterpart in this years' Beanpot. With a relaxed attitude and not too much sweat, the Crimson skated to a 10-0 victory over Boston University last night at Northeastern's Matthews Arena.

The game seemed over even before the puck was dropped. An extremely weak B.U. club squad was overpowered by the high-flying Crimson, which came into the game riding a four-game winning streak.

The contest's winning goal came just 49 seconds after the opening faceoff. B.U. goaltender Michelle Mesnick, in trouble on the opening shift, let a shot from Crimson third-stringer Emily Diehl slip by.

"It was really nice. Just about everyone who doesn't score got the chance tonight," Diehl said. "Our line doesn't get to do that a lot."

Harvard coach John Dooley kept his top line off the ice for much of the game, playing his entire roster evenly. Sophomore goaltender Lexi Shear, in one of her few experiences this season, recorded the shutout.

But B.U. Coach George Tahan harshly criticized Dooley after the pasting.

"For a tournament with the tradition of showcasing talent, to run up the score of 10-0, is nothing but detrimental, and does nothing but hurt the game of women's hockey," Tahan said. "I'm not one to judge the coach, I just feel really badly that he would do that."

With his third-string players tallying four of the five scores in the final period, Dooley insisted that his intention was not to run up the score.

"How can you tell kids who have never played a game, or scored a goal, not to score?," Dooley asked. "This is a fitting tribute to all the players who come and work so hard and do so much work. It shows how much they've learned the game."

Junior Kath Ulman and first-year Sharon Johnston each tallied two goals, while Laurie White added another.

"There is always pressure when you feel you have to go out and prove yourself," Johnston said. "This made it all worthwhile. The team has been pulling for me, and I finally did it."

But the third-stringers were not the only people to pad their point-total. Co-Captain Sandra Whyte tallied a goal and two assists, while Kim Landry added another pair of tallies.

The win gives the Crimson momentum heading into a difficult weekend with home games against St. Lawrence and Cornell. But the luckless Terriers cannot even compare to Harvard's league rivals.

"It was a good warmup," Diehl said. "But we've got four big games in five days starting on Saturday. This was a little easier, for sure."

Harvard is now skating without Co-Captain Sue Cullinane, who is injured and is doubtful for this weekend.
