Icemen Topple Golden Knights

The Harvard men's hockey team did just that in beating league-leading Clarkson last night, 5-3, at Bright Center. The Crimson's two Teds--Captain Donato and sophomore phenom Drury--each potted a pair of goals to help Harvard keep alive its home-ice hopes.

Donato's second goal, the gamewinner, was his 17th on the season. The senior winger, with 34 assists to his credit, has equalled his career-high point total. Donato notched his first 51-point season as a sophomore on the 1988-89 national championship team.

A Bright Future?

The Crimson (12-11-2 overall, 12-7-2 ECAC) still trail fourth-place Rensselaer by two points, since the Engineers (19-10, 14-7) topped Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y., 5-4. Harvard must hope Colgate, which beat Vermont, 5-4, can open the playoff door to Bright by knocking Rensselaer off tonight.

The Crimson will still need a victory over St. Lawrence this evening, but the squad ran its home record to a stellar 9-2 with the victory over the seventh-ranked Golden Knights. Harvard also clinched fifth place--at least--in the ECAC. Cornell, Clarkson and St. Lawrence are all tied for first.

Harvard got on the board first, when Tim Burke scored his 10th goal at 6:31 of the second period. Skating four-on-four, Burke swept in from the right side and put a Rich DeFrietas rebound past out-of-position Clarkson goaltender Chris Rogles.

Unable to clear Golden Knight forward Mark Casselman from the slot, the Harvard defense was victimized at 18:30 of the second frame, when the 5'11", 190-lb. winger directed Captain Dave Tretowicz's slap shot into the corner of the net, tying the score at one.

The deadlock lasted 24 seconds. Drury, adding another dimension to his shake-and-bake skating style, gained control of the puck in a crowd just long enough to dump it under Rogles' left arm.

Clarkson tied the game again when Hugo Belanger notched his 22nd goal of the season on the power play, off a Tretowicz rebound at 3:42 of the third.

The Crimson captain scored his first of the night on a rebound, as well. Nearly 12 minutes into the final period, Donato put Peter Ciavaglia's deflection past Rogles with a backhand to the top of the net. Ciavaglia's 123rd career assist, and 186th career point, moves him into a fourth-place tie on the Harvard scoring list with Joe Cavanagh, Jr.

The Golden Knights were not impressed, however. Scott Thomas' power-play goal at 14:30 tied the score for the last time, at three.
