The UC Should Be Ashamed of Itself

To the Editors of The Crimson:

On our way into Paine Hall Friday night, my friends and I actually praised the Undergraduate Council for sponsoring a popular event.

An amateur comedy night sounded like a show that would make everyone feel good about themselves. Even their slogan--"Absolut Comedy--Absolutely Free"--promoted the idea that the show promised to be pure entertainment.

The entertainment, however, was anything but pure. There are not enough adjectives to describe how appalled, shocked and infuriated I was by the comments of several of the performers.

Most (but not all) of the acts were saturated with racist and sexist remarks. One team of performers brought a woman from the audience onto the stage, verbally abused her and then abandoned her to exit the stage and return, mortified, to her seat.

I really wish that she had slapped at least one of them, and I believe that she probably would have if she had seen what was yet to come in the remainder of the show.

Another performer relied solely on bathroom humor. Perhaps he didn't realize that most of us have been toilet trained for quite some time now.

I'm not sorry to say that I did not see the end of the show. I was so offended by the final performer that I, along with my entire row, got up and left in the middle of his monologue. Leaving Paine Hall, my knees were weak because I was so angry.
