The Charles A. Dana Foundation saluted former President Derek C. Bok this week with an award for "his commanding role in American higher education's struggle for excellence."
The foundation will donate $50,000 in Bok's name to a charitable organization of his choice.
Bok, who retired last year after two decades at the University's helm, was honored for "his mastery of the art and calling of leading a great university" at a ceremony in New York City on Tuesday.
David Mahoney, chair of the foundation's board of directors, awarded Bok with a medal, a citation and the donation.
In addition, Brown University President Vartan Gregorian presented Bok with a commemorative scroll signed by the presidents of the Ivy League colleges.
Bok is currently serving a one-year fellowship at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences in Palo Alto, Calif. and could not be reached for an interview.
The Dana Awards are given annually to persons who have made outstanding innovative contributions in health and education.
