Harvey Shines as Brown Moves to Quarterfinals

PROVIDENCE, R.I.--Goalie Chris Harvey turned away 52 shots as Brown held off a final-period rally to defeat Vermont, 7-5, in the first round of the ECAC playoffs last night.

Brown's win was its first playoff victory since 1976, and earned the Bruins (10-14-3 overall, 9-11-3 ECAC) the right to play a two-game quarterfinal series at Rensselaer Friday and Saturday.

Steve Hanley lifted the puck past Vermont Goalie Mike Millham to give Brown a 2-1 lead 11:39 into the second period. The Catamounts (9-20-2, 7-14-2) tied the game on a goal by Jim Larkin later in the period.

But the Bruins regained the lead 52 seconds later on a goal by Bob Kenneally.

Brown's Michael Ross intercepted a Vermont pass in front of the Catamount goal and snuck it past replacement goalie Matt Bertram to make it 4-2.

Yale 5, Princeton 1

PRINCETON, N.J.--John Sather scored two goals and goalie Letourneau made 35 saves to lead Yale to a 5-1 ice hockey victory over Princeton in the ECAC Tournament preliminary round game on Tuesday night.

Yale (8-18-1) will travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to meet Colgate on Friday and Saturday nights in the ECAC quarterfinals.

Princeton, which beat Yale twice in the regular season, finishes the season at 12-14-1. The loss extended the Tigers' futility in the ECAC playoffs, with the team now winless in six games in four postseason appearances.

Yale never trailed, building a 2-0 lead on goals by Chris Gruber at 16:12 of the first period and Sather at 7:59 of the second.

Andre Faust got Princeton back into the game with a goal at 12:46 of the middle period, but Sather got his second just six seconds later and Mike Miller added a power-play goal 25 seconds after that for a 4-1 lead.

Bob Bowse closed out the scoring against Princeton goalie Mark Salsbury with a short-handed tally with 1:33 left in the game.

Hockey East

A measles epidemic at Maine has forced the disruption of the scheduled Hockeyfest '90, slated to take place at Boston Garden March 9-11.

For the first time ever, the Garden was going to play host to the semifinals and the finals for both the ECAC and Hockey East.

The Hockey East tournament has been shifted to the home rinks of the higher seeds, after the Massachusetts Department of Public Health declared restrictions on events involving the measles-infested Maine campus.

The Hockey East has had a very successful season as four of its teams rank in the nation's top 15. Boston College, Maine, Boston University, and Providence all hope good efforts in the league playoffs will secure a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Despite the cancellation of the duel championships at the Garden, the ECAC has decided to continue with its plan to stage its semifinal and final games in the Garden.

The Garden has continued to pursue plans for Hockeyfest '91.
