Netmen Upset 15th-Ranked Arkansas At National Indoor Tournament, 5-1

By Michael Stankiewicz

In one of its biggest upsets in recent history, the Harvard men's tennis team made a mark on the national collegiate tennis scene yesterday, advancing to the round of 16 in the USTA/ITCA Men's National Indoor Team Championships with a victory over 15th-ranked Arkansas.

"It's hard to get noticed as an Eastern team," said Harvard Coach Dave Fish, who added that none of the teams in the top-20 are from the East.

The Crimson's 5-1 win over the Razorbacks at the Louisville Tennis Club sets up a showdown with 4th-ranked Louisiana St. today, with a quarterfinal berth in the winter season's equivalent of the NCAA Championships waiting for the winner.

"We're up against some real fire power tomorrow," Harvard Coach Dave Fish said.

Harvard's only loss came at first singles, as sophomore Mike Shyjan dropped a straight-set match to Donie Wood, but Mike Zimmerman, Mark Leschly, Derek Brown, Albert Chang and John Tolmie swept the remaining singles matches to clinch the victory. Only Brown was stretched to straight sets, outlasting Arkansas' Garron Borkum, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Harvard only dropped 43 games in the six matches.

At second singles, Zimmerman swamped Cha Hoon Im, 6-3, 6-2, and Leschly snagged a third-singles win, 6-4, 6-3, over J.P. Mieny.

"[Zimmerman's] dangerous," Fish said. "He played a complete match and broke the guy down."

Harvard's doubles teams of Shyjan/Zimmerman, Chang/Jonathan Cardi and Leschly/Roger Berry did not have to play because the Crimson clinched the win at singles. Crimson, 5-1 at Louisville, Ky.
