Aquamen Dispatch Penn, 79.5-32.5

Some things are easier done than said.

The Harvard men's swimming team trounced Penn Saturday at Blodgett Pool, 79.5-32.5. Surprisingly, the Crimson (6-2 overall, 6-2 EISL) had no trouble dispatching a talented Quaker squad that upset Princeton just one year ago.

"We expected more of a meet," Co-Captain Ken Johnson said. "It was a downer for us when they didn't come at us."

Penn's top swimmers swam only one event apiece, while league rules allow three. The Quakers did not even enter the 1000-meter freestyle.

The Crimson swam quickly out of the blocks, grabbing first and second place in the 400-meter relay. Harvard's best team beat the Quakers top entry by a devastating 10 seconds.

Harvard dominated the meet, capturing ten of twelve swimming events. The Crimson ran together a string of five consecutive victories, before Penn's Steve "General" Kuster captured the 200-M butterfly. The Quarkers also managed to sweep both diving events.

Despite the lack of challenging competition, the Harvard swimmers were able to push each other to qualify for Easterns in two weeks. The Crimson's Sumner Anderson, Ken Pasternak and Kraig Singleton all made the Easterns cut.

Tom Peterson continued to show why he may also challenge for Easterns laurels. A specialist in the 400-meter individual medley, the 400-meter freestyle and the 200-meter backstroke, the versatile sophomore captured first prize in two different events--the 1000- and 500-meter freestyle.

"In the Easterns, we get to swim more events," Johnson said. "That's where we hope to qualify for the NCAAs,"

So far, only senior Paul Watson has qualified for the national meet. The backstroker placed first in the 200-IM and helped the Crismon capture two relay events.

"Paul Watson is swimming really tough right now," said Johnson whose team probably will tie Columbia and Princeton for the Ivy League title.

"Our main goal is the Easterns and the NCAAs," Johnson said. "Columbia focuses more on the dual meet season."
