Two Men Assault Person On Corner of Mass Ave.

By Joshua A. Gerstein

Two men, one armed with a chrome revolver, assaulted and robbed a person at the corner of Mass. Ave. and Plympton St. early yesterday morning, Harvard police said.

According to police reports, the two men approached the victim at about 3:30 a.m. yesterday. One showed the handgun and demanded money, police said. The two took $10 in cash and an automatic teller card from the victim before fleeing, police said.

Both Harvard and Cambridge police combed the area after the incident, but did not make any arrests, officials said.

According to Harvard police, the victim was not affiliated with the University.

In an apparently unrelated incident late Tuesday night, Harvard police arrested a Lexington man for allegedly attempting to snatch a student's purse while she walked on Plympton St. just before midnight, according to the police log.

Ian Hodgman, 18 was charged with assault with intent to rob, police said.

His arrest came after two foot chases by Harvard officers. According to police, the first chase began when officers responding to the scene of the incident saw a man meeting the description of the assailant. Officers lost sight of the man on Brattle St. near the parking lot.

As police were beginning to take a report from the victim, the suspect was reportedly sighted again near Radcliffe Yard. Harvard officers chased the man again and eventually discovered him crouching outside Schlesinger Library, police said yesterday.

After the victim reportedly identified Hodgman as her assailant, he was arrested by Harvard police.
