Ruggers Roll, 36-6

By John B. Roberts

Scoring a pushover try in the waning moments of the second half was symbolic of the Harvard rugby football club's 36-6 demolition of the top-10 ranked University of Maryland.

After travelling for nine hours to College Park, Md., hoping to reverse a 16-12 loss to the Terrapins' hands last spring at the New England Invitational, the Harvard side returned with confidence restored and the dish best served cold--revenge.

While the aforementioned try was not expected or even typical of Harvard's style of play against a bigger, better scrumming team such as Maryland, it proved the Crimson's dominance.Outweighed by an average of 20 pounds, Harvard'sforcing of the scrum into Maryland's end zone forJason Hurd's aptly-named score was sweetrecompense for last year's match.

"Historically, we are technically sound, withlots of speed," Kingston said. "We normally lostbig games against bullying teams, so this providesa great uplift pyschologically."

Co-Captain Andrew Pinkerton led the way for theCrimson with two tries and two conversions for 12points. Pinkerton is one of three sophomores onthe young squad, which also includes fourfreshmen.

And junior hooker Cliff Lazenby also coppedpersonal honors, being named man of the match byboth sides.

The Crimson side (2-3 overall, 1-1 MetroBoston) needs to carry this morale booster intoits next three matches, all league efforts againstBoston College, Northeastern and Holy Cross. Whiletwo of the side's defeats were to top Britishuniversity teams, the Crimson will have to win itsthree remaining league games to overcome theeffects of its 10-6 loss to Boston University andqualify for the New England Championships.

Confidence is certainly restored, though. "Wehave been playing strong sides," Pinkerton noted."This is a really good win." Harvard also facesDartmouth later in the season, another perennialEastern power, which Maryland has already defeatedthis year
