To the Editors of The Crimson:
Your article, "Life as a Jock Nerd," (Dec. 16) was somewhat amusing and possibly good publicity for the Society of Nerds and Geeks (SONG). However, it misrepresented me as having a fixed "agenda" of sexuality for the talk and inaccurately portrayed the lecture by implying that sexuality was the only subject discussed.
In the one-and-a-half hour talk for SONG, I started from the premise that the object of Yoga is to enhance and gain more control of one's personal energy level. My outline covered the folling topics:
I. Spinal Alignment: straight, twisted, curved
II. Meridians and chakras as metaphors and/or realities
III. Stress reduction and other health benefits
IV. Kundalini, or sexual energy, as primal energy for motivation and action
V. Diaphragm breathing for oxygenation and relaxation
VI. Balance poses as metaphors for life balance
VII. Participation in simple, basic, Yoga poses
The article made no mention of any of these ideas and focused solely on the approximately 10 minutes I addressed Yoga and sexuality. I do understand your preoccupation. However, even in your discussion, you trivialized a topic that demands a more open and healthy perspective. Furthermore, I hardly would have considered my discussion of the subject my "agenda," as it is clear from the outline that this was a minor part of the talk, and in fact I was asked to cover the topic as one of interest and concern to members of SONG.
