The process of selecting Harvard's new athletic director to replace John Reardon '60 finally got rolling when an eight person search committee was named this week.

Chairing the committee is Dean of the College L. Fred Jewett '57. According to Jacquelyn Weiss, Jewett's assistant and executive secretary of the committee applications for the post will be accepted until a deadline in late October. The field of applicants will be narrowed down to a few by early December with an appointment expected before Christmas, she said.

The Big Eight

Joining Jewett on the search committee are Reardon Dean of Admissions Wiliam R. Fitzsimmons '67 Dean of Radcliffe College Philippa A. Bovet, GSAS Dean of Student Affairs Margot N. Gill, Associate Dean Robert A. Rotner, McKay professor of Engineering and Applied Mathematics Myron B. Fiering '55 and Pierce Professor of Psychology Richard J. Hernstein.

According to Weiss the committee will be consulting with a "huge group" of people from the Athletic Department--coaches captains intramural representatives--as well as athletic directors at other Ivy League and Boston-area schools, athletics booster groups, faculty, house masters, alumni groups and the Undergraduate Council, among others.

"Jewett already talked to us about the whole process," Harvard women's tennis Coach Ed Krass said "He made it clear that he cherishes our input about what it takes to have a good athletic director."

"Obviously, coaches of women's teams have different interests than those of men's teams," Krass said. "And I feel they picked a great committee and all opinions will be represented. I don't think anyone will be shortchanged."

Weiss said that opinions will be solicited individually through letters being mailed out this week. Also, ads have been placed in such periodicals as the NCAA News, Chronicle of Higher Education, the Athletic Department's News and Views and the Harvard Gazette.

"I know the committee will pick someone with a solid administrative background and someone who knows Harvard athletics well," Krass said. "I feel confident that whoever they pick will be a strong candidate."

Women's Tennis: In the SUnity Life Tennis Classic in Syracuse, N.Y., last weekend, Ericka Elmuts led the Harvard women's tennis team, advancing to the finals of flight-4 singles before dropping a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Alexis Boss of Dartmouth. While Jennifer Minkus and Tricia Small were the only other Harvard players to advance past the opening round of the championship tournaments, Kim Cooper advanced to the finals of the feed-in consolation tournament in flight-2 singles.

In doubles competition, Amy deLone and Cooper won the feed-in tournament of flight-1 doubles, and Minkus and Elmuts advanced to the finals of the feed-in tournament of flight-2 doubles.

Quote of the Week: "We played really timid and tentative against Arkansas. I think we were intimidated by the exotic nature of their squad."--Harvard men's water polo Co-Captain Andy Freed on his squad's 15-5 loss to the Razorbacks. All eight players on Arkansas are foreign and play for their respective national teams.
