Wanted: A New Setter

Women's Volleyball

By Michael Stankiewicz

Coach: Wayne Lem

Captains: Carolyn Burger and Manda Schossberger

1988 Records: 9-11 overall, 4-3 Ivy League

1988 Ivy Finish: 4th (tie)

While the Harvard women's volleyball team returns six experienced players and boasts an optimistic bunch of freshman recruits, fourth-year Coach Wayne Lem has to be wondering if his squad will be "set" for its opening game September 16.

Having lost three-time Captain and four-year starter Maia Forman from the setter position, the Crimson enters the season with little experience at the most important post on the court. To counteract the lack of experience, Lem will probably start this season employing the 6-2 lineup with two setters running the offense he experimented with last year.

Junior Co-Captain Carolyn Burger, the second setter in last year's lineup, will be counted on to take over Forman's role. Also being prepped for the setter position is sophomore Dani Cunningham.

But the most important member of this year's squad will be Co-Captain Manda Schossberger, who was the most impressive member of last year's 9-11 team despite playing with injured tendons in both her wrists throughout the most part of the season. Whoever Harvard's setter is , she will be looking for Schossberger and her powerful outside hits.

Besides Forman, Harvard's only other losses to graduation are Nicole Anerson and Suzie Nemes. Returning from last year's squad are Burger, Cunningham, Schossberger and the team's two best blockers on the front line, senior Jennifer O'Shea and junior Peri Wallace. Yvonne Karanas, who was slated to start last year before missing the entire season with an arm injury, will likely receive a big opportunity to regain a starting spot.
