Timothy A. Bonang will become Harvard's newest assistant sports information director (SID) August 1, after being named to the post Tuesday, SID John Veneziano said.
According to Veneziano, who selected Bonang from a field of more than 100 applicants, Bonang's greatest advantage was his record with the ECAC, where he has worked as an intern.
"Previous interns from the ECAC have worked out well at other institutions, including Connie Huston of the Ivy League group," Veneziano said, "and John Garner, commissioner of the ECAC, told me that Tim was his best intern ever."
Bonang joins Veneziano and Assistant SID Julie Rice to form the three-person Harvard Sports Information staff in charge of media relations and publicity for the 41-sport Harvard athletic program.
"The opportunity to work with a program with so many sports and on the competitive level of the Ivy League," Bonang said, "the opportunity to work with John [Veneziano] and a chance to live in a big city like Boston are a number of circumstances which add up to a very positive situation."
Bonang replaces Jeff Bradley, who served as assistant SID for two years and is moving on to a job with Sports illustrated.
Bonang said one of his primary goals was to provide all sports with equal effort and publicity.
"Ideally, you want to give the same amount of time to all sports," Bonang said, "but when you win a hockey championship, I understand that things get out of equilibrium."
The Brunswick, Maine native added that he is looking forward to seeing Harvard athletes play on a week-to-week basis, instead of just hearing about their feats secondhand.
Veneziano said Bonang's writing and administrative background were also important factors in choosing the new assistant.
"Tim has the right level of experience," Veneziano said. "His broad background at the ECAC has given him the knowledge to suceed in the field but yet, without having any preconceptions of how things are done in a program like ours."
Bonang graduated from Colby College in 1987 with a degree in English.
